Installing solar panels in Scotland can be far more affordable than you might think, thanks to a number of government-backed grants and funding schemes available to homeowners.

The biggest scheme available is the Home Energy Scotland Loan — an interest-free government-backed loan of up to £15,000, and up to £2,500 cashback for eligible installations.

Under the Smart Export Guarantee, energy companies with over 150,000 customers have to provide a tariff for solar electricity sent back to the grid — creating an extra revenue on top of your bill savings.

If you’re on certain benefits or have a lower income, the ECO4 scheme might offer additional support, and several Scottish councils run their own local funding schemes.
